Coastal communities given £40m cash boost

Since 2012, the government has invested £120 million in projects through the Coastal Communities Fund across the UK. The funding aims to encourage economic growth and jobs in coastal towns and communities. In 2015 Summer Budget, the fund was extended by a further 4 years until 2021 with at least £90 million of funding available UK-wide.

This latest investment comes as a new report reveals that more than 200 projects have benefitted from this funding since 2012. They are predicted to safeguard or create up to 18,000 new jobs and attract over £200 million in match funding.

For details of the 30 latest projects.  12 of the 30 are South West projects:

Barnstable Coastal Community Team, Devon
£500,000 grant towards a £1.88 million project to improve the cultural offer in Barnstable by expanding the Museum of Barnstable and North Devon and making it more sustainable through increased visitor numbers.

Bridport Area Development Trust, Dorset - Coastal Community Team
A £240,452 grant to create the West Bay Discovery Centre at Bridport by renovating a Grade II listed former Methodist church to provide an information hub, including interpretive displays on Westbay’s heritage and the local areas attractions.

Dorset Coast Coastal Community Team

£5.6 million grant towards a £13.1 million portfolio of 18 projects aiming to improve and enhance coastal access, public realm infrastructure, increase visitor numbers, connect coastal communities and promote health and well-being.

Dorset Trust for Nature Conservation Ltd
£154,409 grant towards a £183,711 project to establish the Portland Quarries Nature Park as a high quality visitor attraction on the Isle of Portland. This will involve improving access in and around the park, creating on-site interpretation and providing training programmes to support tourism growth. Project supported by the local Coastal Community Team.

East and West Looe Harbour and Bridge Charity, Cornwall

£1.1 million grant towards a £1.5 million project to take down and rebuild a disused Grade II listed building (the sardine factory) to include a training restaurant, café, outward bound centre, museum and fishermen’s store, supporting the local fishing industry. Project supported by the local Coastal Community Team.

Greenways and Cycleroutes Ltd, Somerset

£84,205 contribution towards a £302,493 project to create a 6-mile long traffic free cycle and walking path linking the National Trust owned SSSI headland of Brean Down with nearby camp and caravan sites and Weston super Mare. Project supported by the local Coastal Community Team.

Minehead Coastal Community Team, Somerset

£130,696 grant towards a £173,464 project to redevelop the seafront at Minehead, including restoration of Edwardian sea side shelters to facilitate new seafront attractions.

North Devon District Council

£1.56 million grant to develop a modern centre for combined watersports at Ilfracombe as a new all-year round tourism attraction. It will also include flexible meeting/ training space, community café and new slipway/ seawall. Project supported by the local Coastal Community Team.

The Peninsula Trust Ltd, Cornwall

£463,360 grant to create 6 work units in Rame, Cornwall, for the Peninsula Trust. Work will include renovation of their existing property to create an area suitable for training, events and exhibitions. Full support service for local businesses will be provided. Project supported by the local Coastal Community Team.

Plymouth City Council

£2 million grant towards to a £29.8 million scheme to refurbish and create new cultural and heritage venues to promote Plymouth as an internationally significant visitor attraction ahead of the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020. Project supported by the local Coastal Community Team.

St Ives Coastal Community Team

£3.25 million grant to acquire an unused building and transform it into an enterprise hub, offering commercial workspace, training activities, facility hire and partnership initiatives to support the development of small, local businesses.

Swanage Pier Trust
£500,000 grant towards a £2.37 million scheme to secure the future of Swanage Pier and build its potential as an economic, tourism and heritage asset. Major repair works will be carried out to the pier structure and Marine Villas, a Grade II listed building, will be refurbished as a visitor and education centre. Project supported by the local Coastal Community Team.
